HANOVER PARK, Ill. - School Health Corporation has announced its first $10,000 Sweepstakes Winner: Brielle Elementary School in Brielle, NJ. The Sweepstakes Award came at a critical juncture for the school, which has experienced a tremendous 38% rise in enrollment since 2000.

"With such rapid growth in our K-8 elementary school, keeping pace with technological advancements and other budgetary demands has been challenging," said Christene Parker, RN, BSN, CSN, school nurse at Brielle Elementary School. "We plan to use this award to expand our school's health program, including updating our early intervention vision and hearing screening initiatives."

"Research studies have shown that early detection can often circumvent learning delays, prevent loss of sight, and avert other permanent vision, speech, or hearing problems," said Susan Rogers, President, School Health Corporation. "We are so gratified to know that children in Brielle will reap the benefits of state-of-the-art equipment, such as the EroScan otoacoustic emissions screening system and the SureSight vision screener, which can help ensure that children with auditory or vision deficiencies are identified long before they experience significant learning difficulties."

Throughout the past year, School Health Corporation has entered customers' names into the Sweepstakes each time they placed an order. Mail-in entries were also accepted.

Joanne Nicholas, School Health's Mid-Atlantic regional sales manager, presented the $10,000 check to Parker. Said Nicholas, "Although the winner was drawn at random, the award could not have gone to a more deserving school nurse."

Parker has distinguished herself as an executive committee member of the Monmouth County School Nurse Association and as a member of the New Jersey State Obesity Prevention Task Force. At the same time, she is completing her master's degree in school nursing at Monmouth University. Parker also runs the Fun & Fitness program, an after-school exercise and nutritional experience that fosters strong personal health choices and promotes a sense of
well-being. The Brielle Education Foundation sponsors the program as part of its effort to stem the tide of childhood obesity and diabetes in the United States. Parker's master's thesis also focuses on preventing pediatric obesity.

"I am inspired by the enthusiasm, devotion, and determination of Christene and other school nurses," Nicholas said. "They work tirelessly - not only screening children for health problems, but also educating students and their families about relevant issues, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), head lice, hygiene, nutrition, fitness, and much more."
