Introduction
Each year, students aged kindergarten through twelfth grade miss over 160
million school days due to absenteeism. Illness is the largest single contributor
to student and staff absenteeism and causes a number of negative consequences,
such as poor educational performance for students and schools, increased
healthcare costs for parents and schools, increased substitute teacher pay,
and decreased funding for schools. Since 80% of infectious diseases are
spread by hand-based contact, using a convenient and low-cost hand sanitizer
is a powerful first line of defense against student and staff illnesses.
In fact, recent studies show that student illness-related absenteeism can
be reduced by up to 50% by implementing a hand sanitizer and training program
throughout the school.
Although a hand sanitizer
is an essential part of absenteeism reduction, it is only half of the
solution. Training and motivation is the second essential part of absenteeism
reduction. Implementing a hand sanitizer throughout a school requires
participation from students, teachers, and administrators. Students need
to be educated about the products and motivated to use the products. Teachers
need to be educated about the importance of hand hygiene and how to motivate
students to use the product safely. Finally, administrators need to be
educated about the need for hand hygiene in schools and how to maximize
the benefits of implementing hand hygiene in their school.
The
B4 School Hand Hygiene Program is a software program
designed to educate school nurses, teachers and administrators about hand
hygiene, germs, safety and the basics of disease transfer. The objectives
of the Program are to reduce the risk of illness in students, teachers,
and parents, and to improve academic achievement through better health.
The Program also includes curriculum and teaching activities to motivate
students to develop better hand hygiene habits.

"The
B4School Hand Hygiene Program is a very professional CD program. It
is easy to navigate and provides sound, evidence-based training. The Avant
Original Instant Hand Sanitizer dispenser system has been very effective
in our school. The dispensers are easy to use, the kids like the product

Nurse Quote:
"As a school nurse, I know that hand hygiene is important, but
I need an easy way to educate students, teachers, and administration about
the importance of hand hygiene. I also need to have the facts about a
hand hygiene program that will help me make a compelling argument to administration
that a program will pay for itself with decreased student and staff absenteeism."
