Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is there a medical term for a decrease in the amount of blood oxygen?
A: Yes, the proper medical term is Hypoxemia. If the tissues receive too little oxygen, hypoxia can occur, which can result in tissue damage or death. A pulse oximeter is able to measure how much of the hemoglobin is carrying oxygen.

Q: What is the normal range of SpO2?
A: The normal range of SpO2 is 95% to 99%.

Q: What kind of patients is at risk for Hypoxemia?
A: The following conditions put patients at risk for Hypoxemia. They are Asthma, Acute Pulmonary Disease (Pneumonia), Cystic fibrosis, Post-Op, Multiple Sclerosis, Coma, Head Injury, Cardiac problems, Pain Management Regimens (Patient-controlled analgesia, IV conscious sedation, Epidurals), Anemia and Obesity. These represent only some of the conditions. There are many others.

Q: Are there other applications where detection of Hypoxemia may be important?
A: Yes. Some of those applications would be: weaning patients from supplemental oxygen, assessing patient tolerance to activity, assessing effectiveness of treatments such as bronchodilators (Spirometry) and assessing tolerance to analgesia and sedation.

Q: How is the Onyx Pulse Oximeter powered?
A: The Onyx is powered by 2 AAA-size alkaline batteries.

Q: Can the Onyx be used on very young children?
A: The size of the child's finger is the critical issue. The finger thickness range for this piece of equipment is between 0.3 and 1.0 inches. The typical age of a young child would be about 3 years of age and up.

Q: Is any maintenance required for the Onyx?
A: No, there is no maintenance required.
