Introduction

The Welch Allyn Audioscope 3 is a fast and reliable device used to screen for hearing loss. With Audioscope 3 an examiner can screen subjects quickly and accurately. The screening process is a simple procedure and only takes seconds. Since the Audioscope 3 has 20, 25, and 40 dB HL levels in a single unit, patients may be screened with one instrument. The tones are presented at random intervals so patients can't second-guess their hearing test. This varied timing provides improved results.

Product Overview and Description
Audioscope 3 represents the latest in audiometric screening technology by presenting a unit with three screening levels, varied timing, and pretone. The screening audiometer tests at 20, 25, and 40 dB HL levels and the otoscope in the unit uses halogen light and fiber optics for brilliant view of the tympanic membrane and ear canal before and during hearing screening. It is suitable for screening subjects from school children to elderly adults. These tones are randomly presented for to insure objectivity. The Audioscope 3 also has built in a 1000 Hz pretone, presented at 20 dB HL above the screening level, so patients have the opportunity to "practice" listening before they are actually screened. After the pretone, the patient is given the easiest tones first, beginning with 1000 Hz. This way the reliability of the patients' responses is enhanced.

Product Use and Procedure
1. Seat the patient in a quiet room. Attach the appropriate AudioSpec to the Audioscope 3. Instruct the patient as to the method of response. Retract the pinna.

2. Select the desired screening level. Insert the Audioscope 3 into the ear canal. (Visually inspect the tympanic membrane to verify that the canal is not blocked with wax and to make sure the tip is not pressing against the canal.)

3.

Depress the "Start" button. Observe the tone indicators and the patient's responses. Screen the opposite ear. Failure at any frequency necessitates a re-screen. Second failure may indicate a need for referral.
