Introduction

The CDC guidelines state that the most effective way to prevent the spread of disease and infection is through effective hand washing. In addition, methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA) has reached epidemic levels and has gained national attention. MRSA is a very aggressive staphylococcal infection that can live for weeks on objects like sinks, towels, keyboards, desks, etc. , It is resistant to most antibiotics and can evolve rapidly to a dangerous condition requiring immediate medical attention. MRSA is most common where people congregate, such as athletics, schools, military, prisons, etc. An effective plan to prevent MRSA and other infections incorporates a good protocol for hygiene starting with the hands.

Product Overview and Description
Hibiclens is a pharmaceutical grade antimicrobial soap that is available without a prescription. The active ingredient is chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). CHG has excellent broad spectrum germ-killing activity and is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as enveloped viruses (flu viruses, HIV, E-coli, etc). The unique feature of Hibiclens is the CHG, which bonds to the outer layer of the skin and continues to kill bacteria for up to 6 hours after washing. As you contact contaminated surfaces, Hibiclens can help protect you from the potentially harmful bacteria that are found almost everywhere. Hibiclens killed MRSA in in vitro tests.

If you are using an alcohol rub as part of your hand hygiene protocol, the directions most likely advise to "start with clean hands." Hibiclens cleans hands. It is an excellent companion product because it removes debris, excess emollients, and provides a CHG barrier for continuous action in between alcohol rub applications.

Hibiclens is the market leader in sink-based antimicrobial antiseptic soaps in the healthcare market because of its proven efficacy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Has Hibiclens' efficacy been tested?
A: Hibiclens is a medical product which is controlled by the FDA. This means it has been thoroughly tested and validated.

Q: Has there been any testing vs MRSA?
A: Hibiclens has been tested and validated in vitro (in a lab) against 11 common strains of MRSA including the 300 strain that has been active in the community (as opposed to in hospitals).

Q: Can Hibiclens be used on wounds?
A: Hibiclens can be used on surface skin wounds to reduce bacteria that can potentially cause infection and disease.

Q: Is there a danger of pathogens developing a resistance to Hibiclens?
A: Many tests have been conducted to determine if pathogens can develop a resistance to the antimicrobial action of Hibiclens. In the 30+ years that Hibiclens has been a part of the infection control procedures for the health care market, there have been no reported cases of resistant organisms through testing or usage.

Q: Is Hibiclens flammable?
A: No. Hibiclens is a water based soap that is used at the sink with water.

Q: Can Hibiclens be used with other soaps and rubs?
A: Alcohol has no effect on Hibiclens and can be used in partnership for good hand hygiene. Regular soaps have a slight effect on Hibiclens due to conflicting ingredients. If regular soap is used throughout the day, Hibiclens should be reapplied on a regular basis after using regular soap to allow the residual germ-killing action to be more effective.

Q: What if Hibiclens is ingested?
A: Hibiclens is for external use only. If swallowed, seek medical attention.

Q: Will Hibiclens prevent infections?
A: Hibiclens helps prevent skin infections, thereby reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

Q: Will Hibiclens prevent flu outbreaks?
A: The primary vehicle for cross-contamination is via the hands. Hibiclens can reduce the risk of cross-contamination by providing an effective antimicrobial action with residual killing action for up to 6 hours. Hibiclens has shown in vitro efficacy against enveloped viruses including the influenza and avian flue viruses.

Q: Can Hibiclens be used in the shower?
A: Hibiclens is approved as a general skin and skin wound cleanser. It should not be used in the area of eyes, ears, nose or mouth. It can be used to cleanse suspected skin areas to reduce bacteria and help prevent infection, but is not indicated for full body washing as noted above.
