Introduction

The SureTemp 690 combines fast response time with uncompromising accuracy, the same precision designed into every SureTemp electronic thermometer. It's a perfect solution for your electronic thermometry needs, offering speed and accuracy, with the convenience and flexibility you expect from Welch Allyn.

Product Overview and Description
Designed to give fast accurate temperature readings, the Welch Allyn SureTemp 690 sets a new standard in flexible, convenient electronic thermometry. The SureTemp provides 4 second oral and 10-second pediatric axillary temperature measurements (for children under 17 years old), and 15 second adult axillary temperature. With an interchangeable probe you can also take rectal temperatures in15 seconds. The unit can be integrated with an optional rolling stand or wall mount.

Product Use and Procedure

Set Up:
1. Install the supplied Oral/Axillary probe or optional rectal probe inserting the latching plug on the end of the coiled cord into the plug receptacle on the unit. The plug snaps into place and cannot be removed without depressing the latch.
(Note: The oral probe is also used to take the Axillary measurement).
2. Verify that the oral mode icon is selected by observing the flashing head icon on the instrument's display. If this icon is not flashing, press the Mode Selection button until the head icon appears.
3. Insert probe shaft completely into probe storage channel.
4. Remove the probe from the storage channel.
5. With the oral mode indicator flashing, quickly place the probe tip under the patients tongue on either side of the mouth to reach the rear sublingual pocket. Click here to view the desired sublingual pocket placement. Have the patient close his/her lips around the probe.

Changing Probes
1. Depress the latch and unplug the probe connector from the thermometer.
2. Remove the probe from the storage channel.
3. Repeat steps 1 through 5 in the SETUP section.

Features
Normal Mode: The thermometer takes oral temperatures in about 4 seconds and rectal temperature in about 15 seconds. Axillary temperatures taken using the Normal-operating mode will display temperatures in about 10 seconds for patients 17 years and under, 15 seconds for those patients over the age of 18. The unit will always operate in Normal mode unless the Mode Selection button is set for monitor mode. Replacing the probe in the storage channel automatically resets the unit to Normal mode.

Monitor Mode: Monitor mode is generally used for the long-term (continuous) temperature monitoring, taking adult axillary temperatures, or when difficult situations prevent accurate temperatures from being taken in the Normal mode.

Automatic backlight, for easier reading of temperature display in darkened rooms.

Oral/Axillary Probe with 4' coiled cord and latching plug to prevent unintentional plug removal.

Mode Selection: Used to change the current measurement site to oral, adult axillary or pediatric axillary. The selected measurement site is displayed by a flashing body site icon. Note that no other measurement sites are available when using the red probe in the rectal mode.

Recall: Press and release the Recall button when the display is blank to recall the last completed predicted temperature. The LCD will display the recalled temperature for five seconds.

C/F: Press and release the C/F (Celsius/Fahrenheit) button to toggle between temperature scales anytime a temperature is displayed on the LCD.

Operation:
Withdraw the probe from the storage channel and observe a thermometer display test followed by an audible tone and select the mode you would like -Oral, Adult Axillary, or pediatric axillary. Load a probe cover onto the probe. Hold probe handle collar with thumb and forefinger, being careful not to hold or press the ejection button. Press the collar down firmly to secure the cover.

Taking an Oral Temperature
The ability of the 690 SureTemp to take an accurate oral temperature in about 4 seconds requires correct user technique.

1. With the flashing head icon showing on the display, insert the probe tip gently into the patients slightly opened mouth. Quickly slide the probe under the tongue on either side of the mouth to reach the sublingual pocket. Have the patient close his/her lips around the probe. Click here to view the desired sublingual pocket placement.
2. Hold the probe in place, keeping the tip in contact with tissue during the entire temperature measurement. Holding the probe still will ensure a fast and accurate measurement.
3. When the final temperature measurement has been reached, a tone will sound and the patient's temperature will be displayed.
4. After the temperature measurement is complete, remove the probe from the patient, and then eject the probe cover by firmly pressing the ejection button on the probe.
5. Insert the probe into the storage channel to clear the display, in preparation for another temperature.

Using the Monitor Mode
Remove the probe from the storage channel and take a temperature using Oral, Rectal, or Axillary Mode. After the temperature is displayed, depress the Mode selection button to select monitor mode. The "Monitor" icon will appear on the LCD indicating the unit is in Monitor mode. The unit is ready to continuously display temperatures in Monitor mode. After the monitor mode temperature has been taken, replacing the probe in the storage channel clears the display and resets the thermometer to Normal mode. The unit will automatically enter the Monitor mode by removing the probe form the probe storage channel and waiting 60 seconds.

Note: When using the Monitor Mode, allow the temperature readout to stabilize for 3 minutes for oral and rectal temperatures and 5 minutes for axillary temperatures.

Taking Axillary temperatures-Blue Capped Probe
Axillary temperatures in children ages' birth through 17 years can be taken with the SureTemp 690 in Pediatric Axillary mode, with an oral probe.

1. Withdraw the oral probe from its storage channel and observe a quick thermometer self-test on the display.
2. Depress and hold the Mode Section button to reach pediatric axillary. An infant icon will now appear in the display, indicating that the thermometer is ready to take an axillary temperature. Unless the thermometer is in the axillary mode, inaccurate axillary temperature readings will result.

Note: The thermometer may be placed in the Axillary mode as the default mode using the Biotech mode, see the Technical Service manual for further assistance. When the default mode is set to Axillary, you will not need to press the mode selection button.
3. Attach a probe cover as described in step 2 of the OPERATION Section.
4. Lift the patient's arm so that the entire axilla is easily visualized.
5. Place the probe as high as possible in the axilla. Do not allow the probe tip to come into contact with the patient until it is deliberately placed in the measurement site. Any tissue contact before this time will activate the probe position icon and may cause inaccurate temperature readings.
6. Be sure that the probe tip will be completely surrounded by axillary tissue. Clothing or any other material touching the probe tip may cause inaccurate reading.
7. Place the arm snugly at the patient's side. Hold the arm in this position without movement of the arm or probe during the measurement cycle. Movement of the arm or probe during this time will activate the probe position icon and may cause inaccurate readings.
8. An audible tone and display of a temperature reading indicates the final temperature has been reached.
9. After the temperature measurement is complete, remove the probe from the patient's axilla, and then eject the probe cover by firmly pressing the ejection button on the probe.
10. Insert the probe into the storage channel to clear the display, in preparation for taking another temperature.

Taking Axillary Temperatures-Blue Capped Probe
(Patients 18 Years and up)
Axillary temperatures for patients 18 years and older should only be taken when the SureTemp is in the Adult Axillary mode using an oral probe.

1. Withdraw the oral probe from its storage channel and observe a quick thermometer self-test on the display.
2. Depress and hold the Mode Section button to reach Adult axillary. A body icon will now appear in the display, indicating that the thermometer is ready to take an adult axillary temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I sometimes get inaccurate temperatures, is there a specific technique to get the proper results?
A: Inaccurate readings can usually be attributed to either improper technique (not placing the probe tip in the sublingual pocket) and or not using Welch Allyn probe covers. Welch Allyn Probe covers should be used on the SureTemp 690.

Q: What is the approximate battery life of the unit?
A:

The SureTemp should give 5000 temps using 3 AA batteries.

Q: How long is the warranty on the unit?
A: Instruments purchased from Welch Allyn are warranted to be free from original defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of three years from the date of first shipment from Welch Allyn. There is a 1-year limited warranty on the probe and probe covers.

Q: How accurate is the unit?
A: The unit's accuracy is plus/minus .02 F or .01 C. Also, the ear is the true core temperature; rectal will read 1 degree high; under the arm runs 1-2 degree low, and oral runs 1 degree lower than core.

Q: Who can use an AED?
A: Most AEDs are designed to be used by non-medical personnel who have been properly trained. Having more people in the community who can respond to a medical emergency by providing defibrillation will greatly increase sudden cardiac arrest survival rates.

Q: What is the proper procedure to take an oral temperature?
A: Remove probe from well and wait for the "ready" beep before applying a probe cover.
Place the probe tip deep into the patient's sublingual pocket.
Do not hand the probe tip the patient to place into his own mouth.
Always hold the probe in place maintaining tissue contact until temperature is complete (about 4 seconds). Loss of tissue contact may prevent the thermometer from displaying a final temperature.
Allow your patient to ask questions prior to placing the probe in the mouth. Encourage them not to speak while thermometer is taking a temperature.

Q: Could anything interfere with proper test taking?
A: The following may interfere with accurate readings for up to 20 minutes:
Ingesting hot or cold liquids
Eating
Chewing gum
Smoking
Strenuous activity such as climbing stairs or running
