Overview and Description
The first edition
of The Manual of School Health was published in 1986. In the year 2000,
Keeta Lewis (one of the original authors) recognized the need to revise,
update and expand the manual. With the commitment of a loyal friend and
colleague Bonnie Bear, the two women began the long journey of gathering
new information and statistics in the child health care arena. Keeta and
Bonnie diligently compiled current statistics and information on existing
and newly developed child health conditions, new procedures, medications
and best practices to care for children in a new millennium and changing
world.
The manual also includes numerous charts, graphs and illustrations related
to child health disorders, growth, development and immunizations. It contains
conversion tables, formulas and biostatistics for temperatures and weight,
nutritional allowances and supplements, recommended dietary allowances,
vital signs for normal values, reference ranges for laboratory tests and
much more. There is a reference section in the manual, which includes
valuable phone numbers and e-mail addresses for a rich collection of clearinghouses
and organizations related to child health care. The English-Spanish Equivalents
of Commonly Used Health Terms and Phrases section is of great value to
nurses in many regions throughout the nation. Last, but certainly not
least, is the index section which helps the health care provider quickly
find the page numbers in the manual related to conditions of particular
interest.
Although The Manual
of School Health, 2nd Edition, was just launched last year, it has already
sold out from the first printing by the publisher and a second larger
printing has recently been completed to accommodate the demand from the
school nurse community.

Frequently
Asked Questions
| Q: |
I
have had my original Manual of School Health for 10 years, why do
I need this book? |
| A: |
This is the 2nd
edition of the same book (which is teal colored with white paper dolls
on the cover). It is a concise and quick reference book with up to
date, state of the art information. It is more than double the size
of the 1st edition with 4 new chapters and is priced the same as the
original publication.
|
| Q: |
As
a new school nurse why should I invest in this book? |
| A: |
The Manual provides
up-to-date, research-based information on a majority of acute and
chronic illnesses. With each acute illness discussed exclusion and
readmission guidelines are included for school districts that do
not have their own protocol to follow. It is in outline format for
fast access.
|
| Q: |
What is the most critical data included that is extremely pertinent
for nurses? |
| A: |
It is difficult
to select out one piece of research information critical to school
nurses. But the authors feel that with the biology, anatomy and physiology
background and education school nurses have, the new addition of brain
findings is critical for nurses. This can be shared with and/or translated
to school staff and students. Each chapter has current research based
information on the brain starting with intrauterine development. New
drawings include structures and mapping of the brain, hearing and
vision pathways, and effects of substance abuse on the brain. Also,
school nurses either do vision and hearing screenings and/or interpret
the screening results for others. The chapter, Vision and Hearing,
is expanded and includes critical data. Brain pathways for both hearing
and vision are included as well as definitions of visual impairment,
blindness, hearing loss and deafness.
|
| Q: |
What
are the four new chapters? |
| A: |
New Chapters were
created after conducting focus groups with school nurses around the
United States. The new chapters are:
| 1 |
Affective
and Behavior Disorders,
|
| 2 |
Violence,
|
| 3 |
Adolescent
and Gender Specific Issues and
|
| 4 |
21st Century
Health Challenges.
|
|
| Q: |
Teachers
are learning about the brain and how children learn. Is there data
in the Manual that can be used with health, teaching and the brain? |
| A: |
Yes! The latest
research based information on numerous health conditions and diseases
and genetic conditions are discussed. Growth and Development (chapter
one), includes fetal growth and each developmental age includes a
subtitle of Brain Findings. There is a complete section in Substance
Abuse (chapter 6), which explains the neurobiology of drug addition.
Furthermore, the subtitle of Brain Findings is integrated throughout
the book wherever good, grounded, appropriate research was found and
the information is related to growth, development, behaviors, learning
and health.

| Q: |
How can I use this Manual with parents and teachers? |
| A: |
When providing an
inservice for parents, teachers or other staff the section (i.e. seizures,

with a parent with concerns of their child or the student (i.e. scabies,
strep throat, hand-foot-mouth disease, healing of tattoos or body
piercing).
|
| Q: |
In these times I am concerned about bioterrorism and emergency preparedness.
Where can I find information? |
| A: |
Chapter 11 is titled,
Emergency, Disaster Preparedness and First Aid. Charts on emergency
equipment, rapid triage treatment and nurse's health office supplies
are included. School staff responsibilities are listed. Also, 21st
Century Health Challenges (chapter 10), domestic homeland terrorism

can the Manual help me with IEPs or IHCPs? |
| A: |
A. Many nurses have
used the 1st edition to design IEPs and IHCPs. The sections titled,
Effects on the Individual and Management/treatment, found for every
chronic illness, provide current useful data relevant to the condition

guidelines. Don't forget to include anthopometry measurements (Appendix),
vision and hearing data (Chapter 2) and growth and development (Chapter
1).
Every chronic illness has sections entitled, "Effects on the
