The Ohio Department of Job and Family Service is leading the nation in helping to save the over five million teeth knocked-out in the United States each year.

The ODJFS has expanded the health services equipment requirements for licensed childcare facilities to include those for dental injuries. The ODJFS is now the first state in the country that requires all licensed childcare centers to protect children against unnecessary tooth loss that occurs after teeth are knocked-out by having the Save-A-Tooth emergency tooth preserving system or low fat milk as part of their emergency kit.

The Save-A-Tooth® is a six-part system that contains a Hank's Balanced Solution (HBS), a pH balanced cell-preserving fluid, in a shatterproof container with a suspension netting inside. Research has shown the best storage for knocked-out teeth until a dentist can replant them. Teeth that are accidentally knocked-out will die in 15 minutes and rejected by the body after replantation if not stored in the right way. HBS is not a saline solution but a special medical fluid that preserves teeth up to 24 hours.

If a Save-A-Tooth is not available, low fat milk can be used. However, milk does not replace cell nutrients and, if sour will cause tooth root cell damage.

Teeth that are stored in a Save-A-Tooth, which costs $13.95, have a 91% chance of being saved for life. The cost to replace improperly stored knocked-out teeth with bridgework and implants can cost $3,000 initially and $30,000 over a lifetime.

The American Dental Association recommends that all knocked-out teeth be stored in the best storage media possible. The Save-A-Tooth system is the only product for saving knocked-out teeth that has the ADA seal of acceptance. Information about knocked-out teeth and the Save-A-Tooth system can be obtained by calling 1-800-323-1305.
