School Nursing - 100 Years Caring for America's Children

School Health Corporation and our business partners are proud to sponsor the 100 Year Celebration of the School Nursing profession.

October 2002 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the school nursing profession in the United States. School Nursing emerged as a public health nursing specialty following the experimental placement of a public health nurse in a New York City public school in October 1902. The success of that first school nurse, Lina Rogers Struthers, R.N., in reducing absenteeism due to communicable diseases led to the employment of other nurses in New York City and elsewhere. The role of these early school nurses quickly expanded to include an emphasis on wellness and disease prevention, health education, and a broadly defined client population including children, their families, and the community.

In the past 100 years, school nurses have played a vital role in improving the health and well being of our nation's children. According to a survey done in March 2000 by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are 57,954 RNs employed as school nurses. These nurses are charged with caring for our nation's 52 million students.

To celebrate the 100th year and to inform the public about the invaluable role of school nurses, the National Association of School Nurses is planning a series of events on Tuesday, October 1, 2002 followed by a year long promotion of the school nursing profession. These events include:

National press conference and celebration event to be held at the Henry Street Settlement in New York City, site of the first team of public health nurses to provide care in public schools.
Regional and local events to be held in cities nationwide.
